Behind the Scenes: Bright Young Things

The Bright Young Things in action!

Last month, the RF girls were invited by the Clothes Show Live team to get behind the scenes access to their 'Bright Young Things' photo shoot which featured the emerging talents of winners of the CSL Creative Awards. Unfortunately, Miriam was busy working for the man, so I went on my own to my very first fashion photo shoot. I was a bit nervous but the welcoming CSL team and talents working on set, made me very excited to participate in the behind-the-scenes action and was kind of enough to talk to me about their inspirations for the shoot. Warning: a feast for the eyes ahead!

First up, I chatted with stylist Sophie Benson, co-editor and fashion director at FAKE, whose lilac hair and mermaid green dindrl had me enchanted even before we spoke. She explained that the aesthetic for the shoot was influenced by 'Carnival' with all its expressive colors, textures and flamboyancy. Many pieces were selected from Graduate Fashion week collections and even some high-street finds were mixed in the vibrant rainbow of clothing.

Afterward, I spoke with Jordan Shields, Sophie Benson's stylist assistant and Fashion student at Northhampton University. As charming as the red Valentino x Stegosaurus-inspired coat which he designed (pictured above), Jordan and I chatted about his excitement to be studying his passion and working in the fashion industry. He also has interests in Biology, which sparked the interest of my inner science geek, and mentioned that he often looks to nature for inspiration. The coat, which was used in one of the looks for the shoot, was definitely one of my favorites for the day.

Later I saw Hair Stylist, Jimmy Bilton of Taylor Taylor London, whipping some weave into a beautiful voluminous braid so I was very excited to chat with him about his direction for the shoot. Keeping the theme of Carnival, he aimed to create statement hair that was in itself an accessory to the clothing. It was fascinating seeing him transform the model's hair from one look to the next, going from big and bouncy to clean and sleek. Jimmy mentioned that before he decided to become a hair stylist, he wanted to become a builder! Although the two fields seem quite divergent, I could totally see that with prowess in creating big, bold looks that he had combined the two field into 'hair sculpture'. He also clued us in that the most sought after hairstyle among his salon clients is the 'Alexa Chung'. Ah-ha! I knew it.

Being a huge makeup geek, I had an arsenal of questions ready for Charli Avery, the makeup artist for the shoot. Carnival influences in mind, she created makeup looks with bright neon shades but balanced with some subtle colors to keep the results away from costume and more high fashion. She raved about the new Urban Decay Electric Palette and swatched some of the highly pigmented shades that she would be using on the model, with her favorites being the electric blue and mermaid green. In addition, the friendly Charli was more than happy to help my never-ending search for the perfect cat-eye flick products. She recommended Urban Decay's 24-7 Liquid Eyeliner and Bobbi Brown's Gel Liner as she uses them on herself to get that perfect, precise line.
While Charli was working her magic, I was able to chat with the model Olivia James, the face of Clothes Show Live 2014. Scouted just last December at Clothes Show Live on a school trip, the model hailing from Northhampton, was a pretty as picture as she posed in a variety of looks. Only 15, she said she felt unready last year to get in front of the camera as a proper model, but over the past year her confidence has been increasing and she truly shined on set. She also shares a love for Kate Moss and monochrome-dressing which made me like her even more!

The dopest Jansport I've ever seen! Fifth-grade Siobhan would have been begging my mom to let me wear it to school.

Here is Claire Pepper, the photographer for the shoot, tweaking the gorgeous images.

Dripping in gold chains and on-set mascot, this white tiger backpack was big fave!

Many thanks again to the Clothes Show Live for allowing me to visit the set and hope to SEE you all Clothes Show Live this year. Tickets for 2014 have just gone on sale, so be sure to snatch yourself some up!
