The Fashion Essentials

"Fashions fade, style is eternal"
With the words of Yves Saint Laurent ringing in our ears we bring to you our top 5 essentials, which are sure to carry us from season to season, until, eventually, we are dust.

Siobhan's Top 5 Fashion Essentials

Chambray ShirtMadewell | The perennially perfect layering piece has transformative properties in making any girly dress more grunge or a simple tee look more put together.
Black CamiH&M | In a world of sheer shirts, the cami gives a lady just the right amount of opacity. Thinly strapped, but greatly supportive of our diaphanous dreams.
High-waisted JeansTopshop | These magical jeans suck you in the all the right places, and since Miriam and I are crop-top-aholics, they are essential for revealing just the perfect bit of skin.
Ankle Boots - Zara | Somewhere in between flats and heels, lies my most hardworking form of footwear -- the ankle boot. I probably have far too many of this type of shoe, but I wear them so much (in all seasons!) that it's worth it.
An Assortment of Midi RingsForever 21 | It was Miriam who inducted me into the ring-worshipping cult, and I ain't never going back! Midi rings are the new fresh manicure, and I get delighted every time I look down and see them on my fingers.

Red LipstickNars | The answer to so many of life's problems; if a new haircut is making you uneasy, or you feel "meh" about an outfit, it's surprising what a big difference a little slick of lipstick will make.
Nude BraPrincesse Tam Tam | Not the most beautiful of underwear, but when you're obsessed with white blouses, they're an unfortunate necessity - in the wise words of Ms Houston, "It's not right, but it's okay"
Metallic Brogues - Russell and Bromley | Like every good Scout, one should always be prepared and these shoes mean that you're ready to hit the dancefloor at a moment's notice, should the mood take you.
White Blouse - Monki | Like a moth to a flame, whenever shopping I head straight to the white blouses. Prim and proper, they keep everything in line with my Victorian sensibilities.
A Good ClutchZara | Not overly practical,  but that's never been a huge concern and actually, it really is surprising how much crap you can cram into a clutch.

Defiantly Clutching On

SNAP!! At LFW Siobhan found a fellow rebel with a clutch/cause.

Everybody loves a rebel. From Happy Days' The Fonz, to Wuthering Height's Heathcliff, if technically not history, then culture at least is littered with well loved characters imbued with a devil may care attitude. Striving to  be like our heroes, but having tried and failed to open lockers with a fist-bump, we are instead directing our rebellious spirits towards fighting normcore. And what could be more diametrically opposed to UGG -- so called for a reason --boots than a day clutch

Impossibly impractical, perhaps, but these pretty handfuls bring us so much more joy than a drab old grey jumper could ever hope to do.

Easter Bonnets

"Jess" SS14

Aside from eating a debilitating amount of chocolate this Easter, I have also been marveling at the magnificent millinery of Piers Atkinson. Jarvis Cocker once sang, "Why live in the world when you can live in your head?" but I for one would much rather live in Piers Atkinson's head.

Veils, unicorns and dinosaurs featured in his It's My Party SS14 collection - dreamy!
(Looks 25, 25 and 54 respectively)

#Trending for AW14 has a heady mix of ostrich feathers, golden planes and mini boaters!
(Looks 13, 23 and 6 respectively)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Like the protagonist of some sort of terrible Science Fiction film, my skin has recently been replaced by that of another being, to be more specific, a scaly alien has taken over entirely. Usually accustomed to having skin resembling a particularly horrific BP disaster, I have had to completely overhaul my skincare regime and now words like "gentle" and "moisturising", which were never part of my vocabulary, are at the top of my requirements list.

Style Substitute: Celine Sandals

Topshop Spring 2014 | Celine Spring/Summer 2014 | Miranda Kerr in Vogue UK September 2013

It could be our entrenchment in 90s nostalgia or it could be our aching arches, but it appears that Birkenstock-inspired sandals are gaining in popularity at a break-ankle pace. The influence of Normcore may also be at play here with its the mule sandal silhouette more associated with dads pushing strollers in the park, not a fashionista on the beat. Celine, Givenchy, Isabel Marant showcased their own versions of the Birkenstock shape on their respective collections, but the high street trickle-down is now full effect (as well as the original purveyor standing firmly on the ground). Grey Wind + Hardcore Norm

Spring has come, and while Winter is coming too, this season brings us one of our favorite things -- a new season of Game of Thrones! Last week's episode had me throwing my remote control at the screen when I saw Tywin Lannister melting down Ice in the season opener, so in reverence for the Starks, I dedicate this OOTD to the King of the North! But this outfit was not only inspired by A Song of Ice & Fire, but also the divisive Normcore trend. Of all the houses of Westeros, I would imagine the Starks to be the most likely to embrace a bit of Normcore. Jon Snow in a Patagonia fleece, Sansa in some shearling Ugg Boots, Arya in well-used Nikes, Rob in a North Face down jacket and Bran and Rickon wearing broken-in baseball caps.

Went for a nude lip to match my normcoreness, but I suppose a swipe of chapstick would have been been more appropriate.

LFW: Antipodium AW14

Siobhan & Miriam's favorite looks from Antipodium AW14 (respectively) courtesy Vogue.com. To see the whole collection, click here.

A particular favourite of RF girls, we were really looking forward to seeing what Autumnal delights Antipodium would dish up and we were not disappointed. Once again Geoffrey Finch designed a collection, that every part of which you want to wear. Picking our favourite looks from this lot was hard, but here they are. The ombre midi length skirts were probably our most desired piece, but presence of chunky knits and socks with sandals heels also excited us tremendously! Click below to see some more behind the scenes snaps!

Taking place in an art museum, Greek and Roman gods and goddesses lined the printed catwalk.

What's So Special About Being Normal?

Style Icon?
Fashion has taken a tumble and banged its head on the curb, hard, or at least that seems like the most reasonable explanation for the Normcore trend. This is quite the about turn for an industry which is usually under fire for promoting ideals so out-of-reach even a step ladder wouldn't help with. While we are very much in favour of unlikely style icons, normcore as a trend feels a bit like a peacock has been dressed in a hessian sack.

In Bloom

Unless you happen to live in a cave, or some other place that isn't photosynthesis friendly, you cannot have failed to notice this summer's floral trend. Blossoming on the catwalks of Dries Van Noten and Givenchy, with remarkable speed, the petals of this trend have floated right down to the high street and now most shops are peddling at least one flowery T.

The Secret Garden

Spring has sprung in England and nothing could hold back our excitement to prance around bare-legged in the fancy foliage. Twinning in Jack Wills dresses, we felt the perfect place to take in the beautiful weather were the peaceful gardens of Cambridge.
